Yesterday’s post noted the 50,000+ hour lifetime of LEDs that makes them so attractive
for room lighting applications and here’s an unusual example: LEDtronics says that it
retrofitted chandeliers at Buckingham Palace with LEDs packaged in flame-tip bulbs.
Buckingham Palace LED chandelierThe aim of the chandelier retro-fitting is to reduce power-consumption
and maintenance costs: The next “re-lamping” isn’t scheduled until 2020.
Below is a close up of a flame-tip LED similar to the type used in the royal retrofit. It looks
like there’s a cluster of about 20 or so LEDs, probably sitting atop ac-dc conversion/lame-tip
LED bulbregulation circuitry.
