Ultra-Miniature 0603-Profile SurfLEDs are engineered for compatibility with infrared
and convective reflow soldering and pick-an-place automated equipment. Due to
their size - 1.6 mm x 0.8 mm - they are intended to expand the options available
for backlighting personal desktop accessories, cell phones, keypads, palm pilots,
and data communication equipment.
The devices radiate a light that is available in two intensities: a High-Efficiency
2.0 mcd to 20 mcd at 20 mA current and a Super Bright 25 mcd to 60 mcd at 20
mA current. They are offered in six colors and several related hues, available
on EIA standard 8mm tape 7-ft reels, and feature viewing angles of 140 degrees.
The LEDs are designed to simplify the spatial relationship between the printed
circuit board and remote indicator illumination points by channeling all of
the LED-generated light to the exact location where the light is required. Their
solid state design is intended to stand up to electrical and mechanical shock,
vibration, frequent switching, and environmental extremes. With an average lifespan
that is reported to be 100,000-plus hours, the LEDs are geared to operate 17
times longer than an incandescent lamp. And, they reportedly use 80 to 90 percent
less operating power than standard incandescent bulbs.
