The city council of Pasadena, California, recently approved a project for the installation of new post–top LED streetlights on city streets. The project is part of an ongoing capital improvement project for the city of Pasadena and specifically targets neighborhoods with no existing mid–block lighting. Originally, the project was scheduled to begin in early 2011, however, the scope of work was revised to include additional neighborhoods and to increase the size of the installation. The fixture chosen for the installation is manufactured by LEDtronics of Torrance, California.

“Neighborhood meetings were held, and residents indicated that they were very interested in improving the safety of their neighborhoods through streetlighting,” said Bonnie Hopkins, principal engineer for the city of Pasadena. Forty–eight post–top LED streetlights will be installed. The overall installation will include concrete post top poles and white acorn globes fitted with LEDtronics fixtures. The LED streetlight installation is consistent with the city’s energy efficiency initiatives and is funded by New Development Impact Fees and the Underground Surtax Streetlighting Fund.

“The city of Pasadena is a municipal utility and as a result when the city uses less energy that results in savings for the community,” said Hopkins. The city can expect to use up to 50% less power than comparable existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights, according to the manufacturer’s data.
